Shoulda-Woulda-Coulda

I haven't written resolutions since I was a kid.

I should. Probably.

My Mom always had us sit and write them after Christmas, then we'd stick them in our stockings to find next December and review. We never seemed to keep the papers them beyond that.

Making goals and working towards them, integrating them into my daily To-Do lists. I need to do that. Perhaps I'll make it my resolution. That and taming my PAPER TIGER which lays claim over all my paperwork and consumes an "extra" counter in my kitchen.

Summer Flies

Summer is rapidly approaching and anyone with pets knows this means one thing...

...shedding!

This is the fur from less than 10 minutes spent brushing our two year old cat. The one year old cat ventured over to see what we were up to, but was more interested in licking the brush than being brushed. Plus, she still has kitten fur, so her little tuft of black is small.

To borrow an idea from Marie, I have a Nifty Thrifty Idea for you...

My Dad use to Fly Fish. My Mom use to tie him custom flies. The best flies she ever made included fur from our Siamese, much like this big pile of fluff I've got. Whenever she made a fly with fur from Dusty, it only lasted a cast or two before being gobbled up.

Now, whenever I brush my cat I feel GUILTY about throwing away all that Great Fur! I've even thought of selling the fluff online, but always talk myself out of it.

Today, I saved all that fur in a container.

Here's my proposal to you... if you fly fish and would like to try some flies made with cat fur.... go brush your cat / neighbor's cat / etc. BUT! If you don't have access to a cat, PayPal me $0.82 (to pay postage and PayPal Fees) and I'll drop some fur in an envelope and send it to you. Then, you'll have to let us know if cat fur on your flies works as well for you as it always did on the flies my Mom made.

If you'd like some Free Cat Fur for Fly Fishing Flies, PayPal eighty-two cents to me at me at leavemealone {at} yours {dot} com, along with your address, and I'll send some right over to you!

Jack and Ziggy

Just a few pictures I have had waiting in the wings of Jack...

...and the kitten, Ziggy.

These pictures were taken June 14th.

As you can see, Jack is quite the character (and still "Superman" from time-to-time) and Ziggy is a VERY tolerant kitten! :D

Icky Ziggy Friday

I had a bit of a scare last Friday when I took the kitten and puppy in for their first Vet checks.

I've noticed the kitty's bloated abdomen, but didn't really have any clue what could be causing it. Up here it's highly recommended that you de-worm your animals, so we did. Then, an experienced nurse came in (and then the doctor) and told us the kitty had worms. Also, she had sores in her mouth which could have been from Feline Leukemia.

So. We waited for a blood draw and some test results. It was during the wait that I first noticed I was getting the blisters from my sunburn... at first I thought they were hives from all the animals at the veterinarian's Office, but soon realized it was from the sunburn.

One hour and $54 later, the test came back negative, but what a yucky way to spend a Friday afternoon!

All in The (Animal) Family

The plan was always to have two cats and a dog in our household.

When
Casey found her new home, we were going to get a kitten from my sister (her cat didn't bother my allergies). That didn't work out (getting the cat from Sonya), but, last Friday, we stopped at the local Animal Shelter. We came home empty handed, because although we'd been planning on getting new pets, I wanted to check with Tom first. After he gave us The Green Light, Frank and I went back and picked "Ziggy Ziggers" out of the eleven kittens at The Shelter.

At five weeks, she has a nice, playful personality. The most curious thing about her is that she can be purring and crying (complaining) at the same time! We all like her though.
Here's Zoom Zoom first meeting Ziggy.

53 hours after bringing Ziggy home, Zoom Zoom and her were playing together. It was great fun to see! Although my camera was downstairs and we were upstairs! :P

Originally, I'd planned to get a kitten, then in a year (or so) get a puppy. Well, after doing some reading last month, I realized that raising a puppy and kitten together would probably result in a happier animal home.

So, this morning, we went back for a 3-month-old puppy we'd seen on Friday. He was available for adoption at 10:18 this morning. We got there about 30 minutes early, "talked" with the puppy, filled out papers, and I was putting the key in the ignition to leave at 10:18.

Jack is so delighted with his puppy, whom Jack named "Zagawuki"!

I suppose I should explain the names. We have an Alphabet CD from Parents Magazine. It's got one alphabet song at the beginning and then one song for each letter of the alphabet. The "Z Song" is called "Zig, Zag, Zoom!" On a road trip last February, we decided it would be fun to name our new pets Zig and Zag (since we already had a Zoom!)

So, now we have:

Ziggy and Zaggers spent some time following each other around.

After just a few hours they are playing and hanging-out together.

Zoom Zoom will probably take a few more days to adjust to the dog, but on their first meeting, she just pooffed up her fur, arched her back, and glared at Zaggers. Since she's 12 pounds of fur, and he's just six pounds, he sniffed her nose again, turned and walked away... no aggression from him, and no hissing or swatting from her.

I was very unsure about going back to the Pound for Zagawuki... he is VERY little (that's good for the size of our house but not necessarily for little kids). Whenever Jack handles him though, Zagawuki just licks Jack. After a few hours with Zagawuki, I'm happy with him. I think he's going to be very trainable and well-mannered. Oh, they said they think he's a Chihuahua mix.

One other thing, for those of you who knew me while I was pregnant, you will find this part the most humorous of all... while pregnant I often said "we're going to wait to meet our child before we name them; since you don't go to the pound looking for a "Spot" or a "Rover", you find a dog and then name it." Well, now I've done just what I said people "never did"... I went to the pound looking for a "Zig" and a "Zag!"

Kids and Their Pets

Isn't there just this special, magical bond between kids and their pets?!

Yesterday Frank wanted to borrow my camera to take pictures of his cat, Zoom Zoom. I found a series of pictures, where Frank was sitting on the couch and his cat walked by his feet, then sat down. She looked left. She looked right. Then, she looked up at her Master. Look at the relaxed peace in her face...

...I mean, it looks like she's about to fall asleep, even though she's just walked over and sat down.

Here's another picture of Frank and Zoom Zoom recently...

One of the funny things about them is that instead of saying "Here Kitty, Kitty" in a high-pitched voice or even calling her name, Frank calls Zoom Zoom to him by clicking his tongue. Perhaps this is from my dog Chandler, whom I had until Jack was a baby. I called the dog by clicking my cheeks like you would to tell your horse to "giddy-up". Anyway, Frank just says "Zoom Zoom" and clicks his tongue and she immediately runs to him and follows him wherever he goes. It's very cool. :D

Thinking about all this is peaceful. I love seeing the bond that Frank has with his pet. I'm eager to provide the same thing for Jack (by way of a dog for him). In the meantime, whenever there's any Pet-Related Frustrations in our home, I just remember how Frank and Zoom Zoom are... what comfort they provide for each other, and I get out my cleaning supplies and take care of whatever the issue may be.

I am so glad I followed my gut and was able to give Frank his cat!

Update on Casey’s New Life

So, this evening, I saw and talked with the Mom from the family that took Casey. She’s been there exactly one week, and SHE’S LOVIN’ IT!!! She’s playful with everyone (including the big, family dog). She "talks" a lot. She’s out and about in their home. She sleeps on Nicole’s pillow at night, curled up to her head, and wakes her up licking her nose. The way she sleeps on her and cleans her sounds just like what she use to do with and to her kitten, Zoom Zoom.

Zoom Zoom has gone around “looking” for her Momma a few times, but all-in-all, she’s doing well too.

It was good to hear that Casey has settled in so well and so quickly… even with a dog! I guess she plays with the dog’s tail (I think the dog is like 15 years old, and Casey’s only 18 months, so, that could explain a lot!)

Just wanted to share that we made a good choice with placing Casey there… oh yeah, Nicole was going to call her “Pancakes” but has decided "it didn't fit" and to name her “Isabella”… which oddly enough, was a top contender “girl’s name” when we were pregnant with Jack.

It All Worked Out for the Best

Last year in January, I decided I wanted to have cats again. For about ten years I’d been using “allergies” as an excuse not to have them. Well, by April, I was ready for a cat. There happened to be a man with my local Freecycle group who needed immediate homes for several cats… one of whom was pregnant. I took her (and the papa) in. Four days later, she popped! We had four kittens. The very next morning, we got the job offer to move to Wyoming.

We wound up keeping the Momma cat and one kitten. Momma had come from a crazy home life to begin with, then, we moved her around all Spring and Summer. She spent much of that time, in isolation with her kitten.

Fast-forward. We have two cats, Casey (18 months) and Zoom Zoom (10 months).

Zoomers is great with the kids! Today, Frank stumbled over her, landing on her tail, and she just sat there. Never moved. Zoomers comes when she’s called. She’s affectionate, but not pesky. Playful, but not destructive. She sleeps at the foot of Frank’s bed… delightful, since she’s “his” cat.

And then there’s Casey. Most of the time, she’s in hiding… under a table, in a corner, or under a bed. Lately, Casey has been having “behavioral” problems (ie: excreting materials in inappropriate places.) Casey comes and shows affection only when she hasn’t been fed. Otherwise, not a chance you can touch her! This isn’t the cat that we saw when we first decided to keep her, back before all the moving and isolation spells. She was kind, gentle, affectionate, and one of the softest cats I’d felt!

Together, these cats are VERY playful, affectionate, and just fun to watch.

So. What to do? Casey is miserable, except when she’s with her kitten, Zoom Zoom. But with the humans, miserable. Just before Tom’s injury, Casey was showing affection, jumping on my lap whenever I sat down (like what, twice a day!?!) Anyway, lately, she’s been having trouble, perhaps just like the rest of us?

Frankly, I’d become fed up. Somewhere between last night and this morning, I decided to write up something about Casey and start looking for a new home for her. I thought this the fairest thing to do, even though Zoom Zoom would surely miss her, for her to be happy and friendly once more.

This afternoon, on our way into our apartments, the people down the hall were moving out. Tom commented "do you want a cat?" and they did! I remembered that this lady was going to go to the pound next month and get her daughter a cat for her 16th B-day. The Mom came in and spent about 10 minutes trying to get Casey to come to her... no good. Then, the daughter comes in and Casey comes right out and climbs in her lap. She would try to get Casey off and Casey insisted on staying. In ten months, I've never seen this cat do that - with anyone! Ever! She’s NEVER just walked up and curled in a person’s lap… not even Tom or mine… upon first contact!

Originally, Mom had ask me to keep Casey until the birthday on March 8th... which I was fine with. But, when her 15 year old was crying because she liked Casey so much, the fiancee was called, and they wound up leaving with Casey.

I hope Zoom Zoom does well. Right after they left, Zoomers was walking around crying for her Momma, but she's settled down. We want two cats, but we want them to get along and be happy in our home. So, we'll probably take one of my sisters kittens (she has a cat that I wanted last year, anyway, the cat is ready to pop, so, in about two - 2 1/2 months, we'll bring a kitten home for Zoom Zoom to have company, and since it will grow up with us, hopefully it will be as tolerant of the boys and well adjusted as Zoomers.

In the meantime, I feel excited and relieved. I think Nicole and Casey are going to get along great! She’s actually already been renamed (“Pancakes”).

Although, this morning I was talking with Frank and Tom said "Casey's not happy, what do you think we should do?" Frank said "find her a new home", but, he was in tears twice in the first hour and 20 minutes since she left. :*( I feel for him, but, Casey will be much happier with Nicole.

It's hard to make a decision when so many are involved. In the end, I hope I "chose wisely".

What do you do when a pet is unhappy in your home? Do you try to “work it out” or do you acknowledge that not all situations were “meant to be” and find a more suitable home for your pet?

POSTSCRIPT: Humorously enough, when Frank started crying right after Casey had left, I ask what was wrong and he said "I miss Casey!" and started bawling! Immediately, Jack said the same thing and started screaming while they both climbed into my lap. Jack was TOTALLY mimicking what he saw and heard Frank doing, even though he could have cared less about the situation!

ABC-Along 2008 - A

A is for Affirmations, Affections, Arizona, and A Mess!

Affirmations is the name of the wonderful fabric I scored a whole bolt of.

Affections, between all sorts of things, but this picture of our Mama Cat (the white flame-point Siamese) and her Nine-Month Old Daughter (the seal-point Siamese) seem to sum them up. They are always together!

Arizona, land that I love, here’s a picture of the quilt my Aunt made me “Road (Back) to Arizona”.

A Mess!”, is what we so often tell our boys they’ve made or how they respond when we say “What did you make?”
